Pembrey's Races
08/07/2007
What a weekend! and where to begin? Friday’s testing had gone well, with no major dramas and just about everyone keeping out of trouble. With all the cars fettled and ready for Saturday’s racing it was down to the town for some beers and a sit down Indian. Come Saturday’s qualifying saw Ryan Lyndsay in pole for the first Vee heat and make it straight through to Sunday’s final. Gethin Jones was next to Ryan in the first heat with Paul Taylor and Steve Ough on row two separated by a mere five one hundredths of a second, right behind Paul was Simon Readman. In thirteenth making a welcome return to Formula Vee was Alan Robinson, two thirds down the grid were a gaggle of AHS drivers consisting of Miles Southerton, Neale Hurren, Stuart Feather, James Conyers, John Bennet, Detlef Brehmer, Gordon Beshaw and bringing up the rear probably the nicest person in Vee Derek Sales. The race unfortunately was only four laps in duration due to a start line incident which ended up with Neale Hurren upside down. Ryan won the race for us with Simon in third, Steve in fourth and Paul in sixth making four AHS driver’s in the top six, with first to sixth being covered by only four seconds. Ryan’s win had seen him claim twelfth place on the grid for the final, with the rest of our boys making the final except for Stuart Feather and Neale Hurren. The first final of the weekend see’s two of our cars have a slight touch that puts them both out of the race these are Paul Taylor and Steve Ough, Ryan Lyndsay and James Birch have a coming together in a rather more substantial way that eliminates both immediately. With Simon Readman being our highest place finisher in eleventh place it is not quite what we had expected from the race. To make matters worse Ryan’s car is quite badly damaged and although will race again it is not quite the same car as it was on Friday. Saturdays racing has ended with our cars sustaining a fair amount of damage and to rectify this we will be working late into Saturday’s hours.
Sunday’s heat grid has two AHS men on the second row with Steve Ough in fifth, Tim Hill is in ninth and Alan Robinson filling the thirteenth slot. The rest of our runners are in more or less the same positions as the previous days heat with once again Mr Sales grabbing the final place. The race while being not too eventful was won by Jaime Conyers with our own Simon Readman in second, Steve Ough filled fifth position and Tim Hill in eighth. Unfortunately Paul Taylor, Neale Hurren and Gordon Beshaw failed to see the chequered flag. In sixteenth was the getting faster as he gets older James Conyers who put virtually a whole lap on Detlef Brehmer; he was also only a tenth of a second behind Stuart Feather. This must have been pleasing for James as he had also made the penultimate grid slot for the previous days final as well as done the exact same thing for the final race of our weekend. The final saw Ryan finishing in tenth in a car that was not handling as well as it could have been, Simon Readman was two positions and three seconds further behind. Steve Ough in fourteenth with four of our drivers having their own dice in the last four places; these were (in final finishing order) Miles Southerton, James Conyers, Detlef Brehmer and Stuart Feather. Although there was a gap between all of them they were still racing each other. This proves you do not have to be ultra quick or up the front. In FVee you will always find someone to have a race with, this is because there is a wide range of ages and talent mixed with always full grids; this along with cars of various performance ensures racing for everyone. This surely is the essence of club racing.
