Lydden Hill

Lydden Hill

Because of the nature of the circuit a bit of what Lydden can produce with showings of promise and some good driving but not quite the results we wanted. Saturdays A session qualifying saw Ryan Lindsay once again our top place driver with 5th place, Paul Taylor in 7th an extremely impressive 11th for the returning Neale Hurren with Ivan Turner 12th and the mechanically gremlined Steve Ough and Steve Robbins 15th and 16th.
Session B saw a fabulous 9th fastest for the ever young James Conyers less than a quarter of a second behind John Townshend a remarkable achievement. James put to shame (in order of qualifying) Stuart Feather, Ankit Love, Richard Potterton, David Shelton, Tony Dowson, Lee Levett, John Randall and the gentlemanly Derek Sales. Overall James qualified in 18th position looking at sixteen other drivers in his mirrors.

Saturday’s heat saw Gethin Jones on pole from John Bowles from David Lavington and John Townshend with James Conyers on the third row with Stuart Feather alongside. This race was won by John Hughes who came from last to first, our top place finisher being Steve Ough in sixth and James Conyers in eighth. Saturdays final saw Martin Farmer alongside Danny Hands on the front row, our man Ryan Lindsay lining up in 9th place and you guessed it; James Conyers making the final albeit in last but still in the race. The final saw no less than seven retirements with reigning champion Sam Oliviera pulled in for a badly smoking engine and our top runner Ryan out with a crash at the Devils Elbow. This left Steve Ough our top place finisher in 7th position and the climbing James Conyers in 12th place.

Sunday’s heat saw the amiable Gethin Jones on pole with his engine builder John Bowles alongside him. Our top stable man was a man whose weekend was getting better and better; one Mr James Conyers with once again Stuart Feather to his left. The race got no further than half a lap when David Lavington decided to take a short cut across the grass and crash into the totally innocent Peter Gregory in his Sheane. This eliminated both drivers in one fowl swoop. The restarted race was won by Gethin Jones in his Spyder with once again our top man being Steve Ough; with the still recovering Neale Hurren and yes once more James Conyers filling the next two places.

Sunday’s final saw Martin Farmer on pole from young James Birch with our top qualifier being once more Ryan Lindsay, Paul Taylor put in a good performance to go straight through to the final and James Conyers had made it to the final yet again; although in the penultimate row. The final was not too kind to us; Ryan pulled out with a broken gear linkage possibly due to the previous day’s crash. The first Challenger home was Paul Taylor putting a smile on Derrick Willets face. Steve Ough was two places behind with Neale Hurren four places further adrift and the impressive James Conyers finishing yet again. This circuit produced results that were to be expected for several drivers, some coming away with better than expected weekends; whilst some definitely wishing they had stayed at home. The man with a big smile on his face all weekend was the seventy one young James Conyers; with excellent results all through the meeting he was surely driver of the day on both days. Castle Combe is next on our calendar; last year Neale Hurren had a horrific crash there resulting in a badly broken leg. Neale made a return to racing at Lydden welcomed by the entire paddock; hopefully we will all have a splendid days racing at Combe in the dry.

Best weekend by a Vee driver was surely James Conyers.

The worst was Bob Higgins

One piece of bad luck struck a non AHS driver; Bob Higgins was unloading his car on Friday when his winch wire broke. This resulted in Bob’s car rolling backwards down his ramps at high speed into Ivan Turner’s dad’s car and then into the guard rail. Bob’s car sustained too much damage to partake in the weekends events leaving Bob no choice but to go back home the same day he arrived.
