AHS at Donington Park
16/05/2006
Saturday was time for another day of Vee racing, this time at Donington Park – fingers crossed for no rain and no red flags, eh boys?
The first practice session got off to a not so promising start, with problems for both Dan Hands and Adrian Weston. After some frantic work by Alan Harding and the guys, Dan Hands was ready to go out and put some laps in for the second session. As he was qualifying out of session, he had to start from the back of the grid for the heat. Adrian’s problems were quickly fixed after some work in the garage, after he had stuck his car up in fifth after the practice.
Rich Honick kept it back on track after the problems he had experienced at Cadwell Park, sadly this time sans the shiny blue wing mirrors which had made their first appearance there two weeks previously. Ed Saunders was looking more confident towards the back at the hands of Daniel Hands' old Leastone.
Second practice was a lot wetter, with the quickest time being set by Ian Buxton in the 1:34’s, compared to Jake Oliveira’s time of 1:21.11 in the first session. This session saw John Hughes putting his Leastone on fourth, as the track started to dry out towards the end of the session and quicker and quicker times came in. Steve Ough wasn’t far off the front with 9th. A battle of AHS drivers at the back saw James Conyers just edging out Detlef Brehmer and Gordon Beshaw.
The heat itself was a dry affair, with no red flags. Steve Ough put in a fantastic drive to come third, just edging out Graham Card in the GAC. Dan Hands put in a stunning drive to come from the back of the grid up to sixth – surely driver of the day?
The final was the last race of the first day for the 750MC event which had run smoothly and to time. Dan Hands once again showed his ability by finishing third, behind the two Oliveria’s – not bad seeing as he started at the back of the grid for the heat! John Hughes was the next highest AHS placed car in seventh in his Leastone, complete with fastest lap, ahead of Steve Ough in eighth in the AHS Challenger.
All of the AHS cars made it to the finish to make it a good and successful day out for Alan Harding’s Lutterworth based team.
AHS will make their next appearance at Thruxton on May 27th. It’s sure to be an exciting day with only the top 38 in the championship taking part.
